journalling: You don’t much like having your photo taken, but every now and then you agree to humour your scrapbooking Mum with a few photos if I’m quick. Today I asked you why you always seem to smile with your lips together, so you showed me a toothy smile and said that you don’t much like the way your teeth look. Then they were gone, and we are back to the smile sans teeth. You might just grow into them one day, you might get comfortable with the way they are, you might even get to wear braces to straighten them up. But in the meantime, I love the way you smile at me, and I’ll gladly take all the photos you’ll let me take, so that I can remember just the way you smile.

journalling (hidden): this beautiful quote has become my mantra - maybe it’s the onset of middle age, maybe it’s losing Mum when we did, maybe it’s just a truth I needed to know. for whatever reason, I am deliberately and purposely taking more joy in the everyday, totally normal, stay-at-home-Mum and mundane moments, being conscious of the myriad small happenings that make up my wonderful life: sharing an orange with my little boys on the verandah, contemplating the endless stream of questions that small boys can generate, teaching a small one how to do a chore, listening to the children making up games, watching a little girl ride an old tricycle in the sunshine. these are the real treasures of my life, the moments that I will mark and not allow to slip away without notice. to live in the now is the great challenge.
